Owner of career consulting service published on premier online Web site

Joan Runnheim, career consultant and owner of Pathways Career Success Strategies, utilized her experience in helping women break into and succeed in male-dominated industries to write an article titled, “Break into Nontraditional Careers” for monster.com, a leading online employment Web site.

Runnheim wanted to write an article to help raise career awareness and encourage women to consider all of their career options. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “Nontraditional occupations are defined as those in which less than 25% of the workforce is comprised of women.” Women and men often have stereotypes of what is considered ‘men’s work’ and ‘women’s work,’” “Men tend to view women as not being mechanically inclined. After working in a field with basically only men, I can say that as a fact,” says Dawn Rogers, senior designer in engineering. Nontraditional jobs tend to pay higher wages than jobs traditionally held by women.

Runnheim’s experience includes successfully helping women break into the construction, printing, and auto service industries. She worked on a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Labor assisting auto dealerships in the recruitment and retention of women service technicians (aka mechanics).

Monster.com published the article on December 10, 2003.
