Featured Article - Developing Targets: How to Hit a Bulls-Eye in Your Job Search

Understanding yourself and what you want in your job/career is a critical piece in your job search. After you have conducted a thorough self-assessment, you're ready to develop job targets.

What is a job target?

·        an industry or organization size

·        a position or function

·        a geographic area

To illustrate what a job target is, let me give you an example. Janet wanted a job in marketing. Marketing was too vague. Janet needed to come up with a position. The first one was Marketing Director. Then she came up with industries in which she would be interested in working. She came up with: Public relations firms, magazines, in-house PR, and communications. Janet decided she was most interested in a job with a PR firm. Next she said she wanted to work in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis or St. Paul.

Using this method, Janet’s first target was: Marketing Director for a PR firm in the Twin Cities.  She went on to develop three more job targets using this method. The next step for Janet was to conduct preliminary research on each target via researching on the Internet and talking to people to see if these areas were still of interest and were practical. Using this method, you, too, can become clearer in your job search which can make you more organized and give you the best shot in getting the job you want.

The above methodology is based on years of research by the Five O’Clock Club, America’s premier career coaching and outplacement network. Recently Joan Runnheim, President of Pathways Career Success Strategies, became certified as a Five O’Clock Club Career Coach.

"Your income is a direct reward for the quality and quantity of the services you render to your world. Whatever field you are in, if you want to double your income, you simply have to double the quality and quantity of what you do for that income. Or you have to change activities and occupations so that what you are doing is worth twice as much."
