Editor's Note

Welcome to Strategies for Career Success, a monthly newsletter published by Pathways Career Success Strategies.

I am excited to report that I recently completed career coaching certification with the Five O'Clock Club, America’s premier career coaching and outplacement network. The Five O'Clock Club's job search methodology is based on over 25 years of research and is the most comprehensive I have seen.

This month's newsletter features an article entitled, "Tooting Your Own Horn" and explains how to spread the word about your work accomplishments.

If you haven't already, check out our newly re-designed website.

Enjoy!

Tooting Your Own Horn

If you want to keep your career on track and improve your odds of moving ahead, get the word out about your accomplishments. It’s not enough to do a good job- the right people need to know that you’ve done a good job. How can you make sure your accomplishments are known to those more senior than you?

The Eight-Word Message

An effective way to let your immediate supervisors and others know what you’ve been up to is to use The Eight-Word Message. Let’s say you’ve been working 70 hours a week for the past month to complete a special project. You meet your boss’s boss in the elevator. She says, “Good morning, Sally. How are you?” You respond, “Great- now that we’ve completed the XYZ Project.” Your boss’s boss will no doubt respond, “Oh, were you involved with that?”  This gave Sally the opening she wanted. “Yes, three of us worked 70 hours a week for the last four weeks. I was in charge of all the marketing literature. I think it’s an award-winning package."

Managing your message

You need to determine who needs to hear your message. Besides your immediate supervisor, come up with a list of 6 to 10 people senior to them. The list could include your boss’s boss, a few of your boss’s peers, and your boss’s boss’s peers. It could also include people outside your organization, such as the head of an important industry association.

Most people do not lose their jobs because of incompetence. They lose their jobs because of poor relationships at work. Develop good relationships at work by making the decision makers aware of your accomplishments.

The above methodology is from the Five O’Clock Club.
