Editor's Note

Welcome to the Mid-November issue of Strategies for Career Success.  With Thanksgiving Day just around the corner, what are you thankful for? A tradition a former boyfriend's family had was to go around the Thanksgiving dinner table with everyone sharing one thing for which they were thankful. I really liked that tradition and have since incorporated it with my family.

This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes an article on letting go of your fears. Fear can be a paralyzer. What are you willing to do to get past your fears and get on with your life? Also, included in this issue is an article on auditing your time management, and in turn your effectiveness, which can help move you closer toward your goals.

And, don't miss our November special on an Annual Career Check-Up. Read below for more information.

Letting Go of Your Fears & Limiting Beliefs

Did you know that you were born with only two fears? Those two fears are the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. All the other fears you hold you were conditioned to fear. So, what fears are keeping you from achieving your career and other life goals?

Are you afraid you won't find a job? Are you afraid you will be stuck in a lackluster career? Are you afraid you won't achieve the level of success you desire? What you do TODAY impacts your short-term and long-term goals.

It could be that you don't believe you can achieve your goals. Most of us have some limiting beliefs that we've carried around for years, often since childhood. These beliefs were "given" to us by our parents, friends, even teachers. For example, maybe you were told, "You're not smart enough." Even though it may not be true, you may have internalized that belief and carry it with you today. That belief can be holding you back from trying new things or learning new skills because you really do believe you're not smart enough. Take some time to brainstorm what beliefs limit you from achieving your goals.

At a workshop I attended two years ago, participants were asked to write one of our limiting beliefs on a pine board. On the flip side we wrote a new belief to replace our old one. Next we each took turns “breaking” our belief by breaking the board, karate-chop style. It was a very empowering exercise!

Your limiting beliefs may be creating FEAR in your life. Fear can be defined as:

False
Expectations
Appearing
Real

Once you've identified and work toward replacing your limiting beliefs and take steps to overcome your fears, set goals using the SMART method.

S - Specific - The more specific, the more likely you'll achieve your goals. Ask yourself who, what, where, when, why?

M - Measurable - Establish concrete criteria such as, how much, how many, etc.?

A - Attainable - Make sure the goals allow you to stretch, but aren't too far out of reach that you give up.

R - Realistic - Do you truly believe the goals can be accomplished? You're more likely to achieve them if you believe you can.

T - Timely - Setting a time frame will create a sense of urgency which is important for goal achievement.

Determined to overcome my fear of public speaking, I set a goal of joining Toastmasters. Since then, I have spoken in front of an audience of up to 250. Achieving this goal has definitely helped me grow my business. Another fear I had was of flying alone. I overcame this fear about six years ago. This has enabled me to fly nation-wide to present workshops. How about you? What fears and limiting beliefs are you willing to let go? What steps are you going to take today to allow you to achieve your goals?

"It is more important to know where you are going than to get there quickly. Do not mistake activity for achievement."
Mabel Newcomber

What a great quote to begin the week. So often in life we find ourselves doing things that while they may be necessary, do not move us in the direction of our goal or life plan. Do you find that to be true? Do you find that sometimes at the end of a really busy day, you are left wondering what it is you actually achieved? In fact, for those of you who value time (and I will assume we all do) then you know how important it is to “manage” or “spend” your time as wisely as possible.  And yes, STUFF happens that can get in the way of achieving your daily goals.  That is a given. When that happens I take it as a wake-up call to re-examine my own priorities and look inside for what really matters. And that’s another topic for another issue.

One of the time-management principles that help me in achieving my goals is the simple 80-20 rule which simply means that 80% of your progress will come from 20% of the actions you take on a day to day basis.  The real secret is in know which actions to take to get you there.  And if you don’t know what your goal is, it will be like running around the block.  You end up exactly where you started!  Here’s a little exercise that may help you in discovering how effective your actions are and re-define which actions you need to take to get you there.  It is called an Effectiveness Audit. And it is really quite simple to do.  Every morning and every evening take 5 minutes to reflect on the activities you do/did today.  Give them a score from minus 5 to plus 5 (-5 to + 5).  A +5 score will be a major advancement toward achieving your goal and a -5 will be something that not only did nothing to help you toward your goal it likely hindered your getting there.  Zero (0) is neutral and the activity did nothing either way toward achieving your goal.  Add up your scores and if you are in the minus at the end of counting those points, then it is time to reassess 1. What you really want to achieve and 2. How you are going to do so.
