Editor's Note

Welcome to the Mid-June issue of Strategies for Career Success.  I'm back from vacationing in Chicago. It was wonderful! A highlight was when my girlfriend and I went to the Broadway show "Jersey Boys"- the story of Franki Valli & the Four Seasons. I highly recommend it! Now I'm re-energized and ready to work hard again.

Follow me on Twitter and receive "Tweets" on    Twitter-exclusive offers with discounts on career coaching and résumé services. These special offers won't be advertised anywhere else and will be available to my Twitter followers only.

June is "Effective Communications Month." How effective is your communication? Your communication can impact your job search and overall career management. If you need to develop or enhance your communication skills, consider joining Toastmasters or taking a writing class.

This past week I attended an entertaining and very informative workshop on improving presentations. This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes actionable tips for delivering engaging presentations that you can start using immediately!

Creating Engaging Presentations

We've all been to presentations that are either a snore, leave us begging for more, OR ones that fall somewhere in between. At some time or another, you may need to give a presentation OR it could be a regular part of your job. Either way, there's always room for improvement.

This week I attended a presentation titled, "Secrets to Getting Any Audience to Lean Forward, Pay Attention, & Follow Your Lead" by Steve Hughes of Hit Your Stride. What a thrill!  Hughes delivered a presentation that was engaging, entertaining, and highly informative- an unbeatable mix. Below are some of the nuggets I gathered:

Open big! - Give them something they don't expect (but don't surprise or shock). Hughes uses the acronym SPARQ to drive home this first nugget. Use one of the following to open your presentation.

- Surprising statistic Start with a number of percentage that is surprising.
- Picture - Show a picture and share a story.
- Anecdote - Share a little anecdote and a story to go with it.
- Real-life example - (make it timely)
- Question or Quote - Ask a question or share a quote and use as a launching pad for your presentation.

Keep in mind that your opening needs to be interesting, relevant, and quick.

Make it about them - In one sentence, what do you want the audience to do, think, or feel? Why? What’s in it for them? To ensure an effective presentation, spend five minutes answering these questions.

Have a point! - Are you clear from beginning to end?

For effective PowerPoint slides, use a 44 pt. font for your heading, 32 pt. for your sub-heading, and no smaller than 22 for your bullets. Keep your bullets to four per slide with four words per bullet.

Paint vivid pictures using gestures. Four benefits of gestures:
1) Gets rid of nervous energy.
2) Increases your inflection.
3) Increases your volume.
4) Gives the audience something to look at.

Don’t end a presentation on a Q & A. You can put it second to the end. Rather than asking, “Do you have any questions?,” ask, “What questions do you have before I make my final point?” You always want to end your presentation on a high note, with a powerful call to action.

I’m excited to start incorporating these tips into my presentations. I hope you are too!

Client Comments

“I had the pleasure of working with Joan as a career coach as well as developing an updated resume. I found the whole experience not only extraordinarily helpful but also surprisingly enlightening.  What seems so obvious in hindsight was only discovered, understood and proven useful with the aid of Joan’s knowledge and guidance.  Because of my extremely high expectations both for this program and myself I know, at times, I was a tough client.  Through it all Joan met and surpassed my expectations. Insight and inspiration offered by her approach has been integral not only to a career change but as importantly a life change. Based on my time working with Joan Runnheim Olson, I recommend her very highly for both career counseling and resume development.”   - Shawn Bennett
