Creating an Online Identity
By Joan Runnheim Olson, M.S.

Lately it seems we're being blasted as to the importance of creating an online identity. For many it sounds like an overwhelming endeavor. Sites such as Linkedin and Facebook are two of the most popular for creating your online presence. Because recruiters use these websites in their search for good candidates, having an online identity is an important job search tool. And, it's good for career management.

If you're a newbie to Linkedin, I found a cheat sheet to help you get started. It gives tips on customizing your profile, etc. Another website, OpenID allows you to create a single online identity and login to all of your favorite websites, eliminating all of the virtual paperwork. If some of your favorite sites don't currently accept  OpenID, they offer a letter you can send to the site asking them to start.

Another good way to make your virtual presence known is to start a blog or post comments to other's blogs. Let's say you're in the marketing field. You could start a blog sharing your thoughts and tips on marketing OR you could google to find already existing blogs and provide comments. This will allow you to demonstrate that you're an expert in a certain area.
