Editor's Note

Welcome to the Mid-July issue of Strategies for Career Success.  I hope you're having a great summer! I discovered the coolest restaurant a few weeks ago. For those who live in the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin area, I highly recommend Vino in the Valley. It's an open-air pavilion restaurant with a vineyard and is located along the Rush River about 10 miles east of Ellsworth, WI. Beautiful setting and wonderful food. Simply delightful!

My mom has always said I must have a neon sign above my house that flashes, "All stray or lost animals welcome here." Last week a lost cat showed up at my doorstep. I opened the door and it ran in. It was a very friendly, orange/white/gray cat. I quickly locked my very upset cat, Snuggles, in another room. I was petting the lost cat and noticed my eyes began to itch. Then they started swelling up until I could barely see. I looked like a circus freak! It took a few days to get back to normal. The pharmacist said the cat may have been rolling around in pollen which probably caused the allergic reaction. Fortunately, I found the cat's owner the next day.

Leading without a Title

You may have your eye on a leadership position within your company. What steps can you take to prove you're capable of being a leader? Or maybe you're already a leader, but don't have the title.
Check out my interview with Monster.com where I answer the following questions:

1) Why are titles so important to some businesses and their employees?
2) Can you talk about why leadership and titles don't always go together?
3) What can someone who's starting out a company do to demonstrate leadership?

Click here for a link to the audio.

Are you- or do you aspire to be- a supervisor, manager or leader? Looking for advice on how to manage or lead others? If so, check out the above link where you can also share your challenges and receive input from me, Managing & Leading Others Coach, at Monster.com. Learn tools and tactics to make a difference in your organization.

If you have problems opening the link, go to www.monster.com and become a member- at no-cost. It's worth your time- you'll find many other "message boards" where you can get answers to your job search and career management questions and read great articles on the same topics.

Upcoming Workshop

Bypass the Collision Course: Manage Conflict and Drive Your Company to Success

When your company is dealing with conflict, you don’t have time to focus on the small things: like business. The truth is, everyone struggles with conflict.  Many try to avoid it, hoping it will just go away. Others enter into a power struggle, with no one winning. The bottom line?  ou can’t drive your company forward when you or your employees are distracted by office drama.

Contrary to popular belief, conflict can be beneficial. This workshop uses the Thomas-Kilmann Mode Instrument (TKI) to help participants understand their preferred model of managing conflict while empowering participants—teaching them how and when to use each of five modes of managing conflict.

Through group interpretation and small group exercises, you will walk away with a clearer understanding of yourself and the skills that will help you steer conflict situations toward constructive solutions.

Searching for a job does not have to induce stress and anxiety.  Don’t get me wrong; in this recession riddled economy looking for work is even more challenging than ever.  But you have tools right at your fingertips to reduce your stress and give you an advantage over your competition.

You can practice simple yoga techniques medically proven to reduce stress and anxiety and help you stay sharp, focused and on top of your job search game.  I’m not talking about twisting into a pretzel; yoga can be as basic as deep breathing (and since you have to breathe anyway, why not reap the benefits of reaching a state of calm!).

Just five minutes can make all the difference.  Close your eyes; sit tall yet relaxed.  With your palms up on your knees, bring your thumb and pointer finger together.  This “mudra” or hand posture creates a calming response in the body’s energy system.  Now inhale through your nose from the base of your belly.  Count the length of your inhalation (helps you to stay in the present moment so you are meditating without even trying), hold for one or two seconds then slowly exhale through your nose (again counting the length of the exhalation).  When thoughts or distractions come into your head (and they will) just acknowledge them without judgment and let them go, bringing your focus back to your breath.

This simple yoga exercise can be practiced throughout your busy day, helping to lower your heart rate, relax and energize you and give you a more focused edge over other stressed-out job applicants.
