Editor's Note

Welcome to the Mid-December issue of Strategies for Career Success. It's hard to believe that 2009 is just around the corner! Within the next two weeks I plan on refining my goals for the upcoming year and come up with some concrete action steps that I will need to take to achieve those goals. What about you? What are your goals? What steps will you need to take to accomplish your goals?

This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes an article with tips on what to do if you're a new boss or have a new boss. If you're not in that situation right now, at some point in your career you will be.

If you live in the Twin Cities area, mark your calendars for a no-cost event on developing your Two-Minute Pitch scheduled for Monday, December 22. Read below for more information.

Happy Holidays!

New Boss? What to Do!

Are you a new boss or do you have a new boss? Worried about what it will be like to manage new people or be managed by a new boss? It's important to have a meeting with your new boss or new direct reports to discuss the following:

1) What is the current status of the business and where is it going?

2) As a boss, what are your expectations? What's the most important thing you need your direct report to deal with in the short-term? How about the long-term?

3) As a direct report, is there anything you want to see more of or less of in your job duties? Are there any special projects you want to work on? Now may be a good time to negotiate some of your tasks.

4) What is your new boss' management style? How often does he/she want to meet? What's his/her preferred communication style- email, in-person? How will you know if you're on the right track? What type of feedback do you prefer?

5) As a direct report, what type of professional development are you interested in? What resources are available to you?

Start out on the right foot with a conversation hammering out the above topics. Getting along with your boss can make or break your longevity with a particular company. Getting buy-in from your new direct reports can impact the productivity of your department.

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.
