Editor's Note

Welcome to the Mid-August issue of Strategies for Career Success.  I'm continuing to cross things off my "Summer Bucket List." I recently went hiking with a friend at Interstate Park near St. Croix Falls, WI. It's absolutely gorgeous with rock bluffs and the St. Croix River. I also went biking with a friend on the Red Cedar Trail near Menomonie, WI. It follows the Red Cedar River and also has some beautiful bluffs.

This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes tips on how to prepare for your next job interview.

Also included in this issue is an article titled "Social Media Explosion" by guest author Barbara K. Mednick. Barbara talks about how social media has transformed the way we communicate and network with virtually everyone.

I came across the following statistics in the Career Management Alliance e-newsletter. Here are the top 5 tactics for finding career options:

1.  Networking (70%)
2.  Responding to online job postings (14%)
3.  Posting resume in online database (5%)
4.  Maintaining an online profile (4%)
5.  Researching target companies/cold calling (3%)

Ace the Interview: Think Like a Consultant

If you're in a job search, don't think like a job hunter. Think like a consultant who is trying to land a $75,000 consulting assignment (or whatever amount you want to earn). Start out by dressing and looking the part. Prepare a 3 x 5 card with your Two-Minute Pitch, aka elevator speech and key points. So, what do consultants do?

Research

- What is going on and what are their needs?
- How can you satisfy their needs?
- How do you stack up against the competition?
- Are they ready to decide?

Follow-Up

- Your goal is to get and give information.
- Don't try to get a job offer right now. Instead, work on getting the next meeting.
- Since consultants write proposals, you will need to also. How can you help them solve one of their bigger or biggest problems?

Implement a Campaign

Let's say you're interested in working for ABC Company. Hold off on contacting the hiring manager right away. Surround the hiring manager, meet with others so when you're ready to meet him/her you have a lot of advocates and know a lot about the company.

Prepare for the Interview

Ask with whom you will be meeting. Find out their names, job titles, issues important to each of them, what they are like, and how long they've been with the organization.

Find out their Objections

Ask: Where are you in the hiring process? How many others are you considering? How do I stack up against the competition? Is there any reason why you might be reluctant to hire me?

Trying to Get an Offer Too Soon

Hold off and give and get more information. Address the issues that concern them.
Remember, consultants don't expect to get the offer on the first visit and neither should you.

The above is based on methodology of the Five O'Clock Club.

During the past year, social media has literally exploded! Not only has it transformed the way individuals communicate with others, it has significantly changed the way professionals and job seekers network with colleagues and communicate with recruiters and hiring managers.

In fact, 43 percent of the online community now uses social networking sites, including Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. This is up 27 percent from a year ago, according to the Conference Board Consumer Research Center and TNS, the world's largest custom research agency.

Harnessing the power of social media is particularly important in today’s challenging economy, where candidates are plentiful and jobs are at a premium in many professions and industries. Not only does it give savvy job seekers additional tools to market themselves, it can also help savvy careerists to increase their visibility and enhance their reputation.

Brave new world of social media

The Conference Board and TNS regularly survey 10,000 households across the country and tracks who's doing what on the Internet. Other key findings according to a June 16, 2009 Conference Board news release are:

  • More than half of social networkers log on at least once a day, and the majority log on several times a day.
  • The most popular site is Facebook, followed by MySpace, LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • Social networking spans all generations.

Not a fad

These days, one thing is crystal clear: social media is not a fad. "Social media is here to stay," says Lynn Franco, Director of the Conference Board Consumer Research Center. "Online social networks are more than just a fad among the younger generation. They're an effective way to keep in touch with people, connect with friends and family, and network with colleagues. Social media will also transform marketing as we know it," explains Franco.

Harnessing the power of influencers

Social media has certainly changed the rules of marketing and public relations. While it is important for businesses to market themselves effectively, it is equally important for job seekers to market themselves effectively and manage their careers in a proactive way.

"Social media has transformed the way individuals connect and communicate with one another," says Anita Watkins, Senior Vice President at TNS.

That’s why savvy careerists are incorporating social media as a way to position themselves as experts in their field. Not only can social media help them get noticed by recruiters and hiring managers, it can also help to set them apart in the marketplace.
