Editor's Note

Welcome to the Mid-May issue of Strategies for Career Success, a bi-weekly e-newsletter published by Pathways Career Success Strategies.

Two weeks ago I attended the 2008 Career Management Alliance Conference in Minneapolis. It was fun to learn new job search and other career management strategies. In this issue of Strategies for Career Success, I share a top-notch job search website.

As a leader, have you ever struggled with a direct report who wasn't working out? Perhaps he didn't appear motivated or maybe she struggled in her position from day one. In this issue we talk about getting the right people on the bus.

Getting the Right People on the Bus

In his bestselling book "Good to Great", Jim Collins talks about getting the right people on the bus, i.e., the right employees in your company. This not only makes good business sense he suggests, it helps poor-fitting employees find a better fit elsewhere.

Oftentimes, we put off letting go of the person that isn't working out. Sometimes it's because we keep hoping the person will improve or we don't like confrontation. Keeping the wrong person prevents them from finding a better fit, and it hurts the company's bottom line.

As a leader, how can you get the right people on the bus? Collins suggests the following:

1) When in doubt, don't hire- keep looking.

2) When you know you need to make a people change, act.

3) Put your best people on your biggest opportunities, not your biggest problems.

So, who's filling the seats on your bus? What step can you take today to ensure you have the right people sitting on your bus?

Interview Coaching

Research indicates that job seekers spend an average of 35 hours to land an interview and less than an hour to prepare for the interview. I was shocked when I heard that statistic! Don't miss out on your opportunity to outshine the other candidates; schedule an interview coaching session today! Call Joan at 715.808.0344 or email joan@pathwayscareer.com.

Great Job Search Tool

I recently attended the 2008 Career Management Alliance Conference in Minneapolis and learned of a great job search website, www.job-hunt.com.

Job-hunt.com allows you to search for jobs that are posted on all of the major job search websites in one place. This can really cut down your job search time. Besides that great advantage, it offers a wealth of information, including:

·         - Over 100 company and military "alumni" groups

·         - Over 400 national and international associations by specialty

·         - Over 600 job search support groups by state

·         - 1,200+ links to carefully-selected employment sites by specialty

·         - 7,000+ links to local resources, for each state including: Local job search support groups; job sites, newspapers, and online classifieds; state and local government entities; colleges and universities; public school districts and private schools; banks, insurance and investment companies; medical, biotech, and pharmaceutical companies, and Fortune 500 companies.
