Editor's Note

Welcome to the Early-October issue of Strategies for Career Success.  Last weekend I returned from vacationing with a girlfriend in Branson, MO, which is nestled in the Ozark Mountains. What a gorgeous place! Famous for it's music, we enjoyed listening to the Oak Ridge Boys sing their greatest hits- they were fabulous. We also went to "The Liverpool Legends" and "The China Acrobats of the New Shanghai Circus." Other activities included hiking six miles and horseback riding in Dogwood Canyon. Now, I'm rejuvenated and ready to work hard again!

This issue of Strategies for Career Success includes an article on résumé myths and the real truth behind each of the myths.

October 13 is "National Face Your Fears Day." What fear is holding you back? What steps can you take today to face and get past your fear? Check out my blog post dated September 8, 2009 by guest author and The KICK BUTT Business MentorSM, Amy Zastrow. Also, be sure to check out Amy's article on achievement below.

Résumé Myths

Everyone has an opinion on résumé. Trends in résumés do change. Below are some résumé myths and the latest trends in creating a world-class resume.

Résumé Myth #1 - Your résumé should be just one page and never more than two pages.

Truth: The length of your résumé is determined by the relevancy to the job you are seeking. Be sure your résumé includes hard-hitting results.

Résumé  Myth #2 - Always tell your objective.

Truth: An objective is "old-school" logic. Today include a positioning statement which tells the reader three critical things: your level, your functional expertise, and your industry (or industries) expertise. Be sure to tailor the positioning statement to whom you are pitching. Here's an example:

Senior Global Marketing Executive

with over 20 years experience successfully launching consumer products and penetrating new markets in North America, South America and the Far East.

Résumé  Myth #3 - Be sure to include all of your responsibilities.

Truth: Years ago jobs were evaluated on responsibilities where today it's all about results. Today you can include two lines under each job title that shares the most critical responsibilities, followed by bulleted accomplishments.

Résumé  Myth #4 - Be sure to tell something personal.

Truth: Leave this off unless you know, for example, that the decision maker loves golf.

QUOTES for the Week:

Ÿ  Only those who dare to fail greatly, can ever achieve greatly.  ~Robert Kennedy

Ÿ  You can't build a reputation on what you're going to do.  ~Henry Ford

QUESTION for the Week:

What is your greatest achievement?

QUICK TIPS for the Week:

Ÿ  Be clear about what you want to achieve.

Ÿ  Believe that you can and WILL achieve it.  Then make a full commitment to do it – no matter what.

Ÿ  Set a deadline and begin without delay.  Keep moving forward even when it gets hard or you feel discouraged.

Ÿ  When you achieve your goal, take time to reflect on your success, failures, what you learned and how you grew.

CHALLENGE for the Week:

Make a commitment to achieve your goals this week – no matter what!  No excuses.  No easy way out.

[If this seems really difficult to you – make an external commitment to someone who will support you.  AND if necessary, add a positive or negative consequence that will help you get it done!]

Achieve with excellence!
