Editor's Note

Welcome to the Early-June issue of Strategies for Career Success.  I'm heading to Chicago to vacation with a friend in a few days. It's been about 20 years since I've been there- way too long- and I live in the Midwest. It will undoubtedly be an action-packed adventure!

It's mid-year- are you achieving your career goals? I'd like to share a quote by Robert Conklin that may inspire you. "If you make the unconditional commitment to reach your most important goals, if the strength of your decision is sufficient, you will find the way and the power to achieve your goals."

If you haven't set your career goals for 2009, it's not too late. Get started today!

This issue is jam-packed and includes an article on adding contacts to LinkedIn. If you're not already on LinkedIn, what are you waiting for? It's great for job search research and for recruiters to find you.

Enjoy!

ADDING MULTIPLE CONTACTS TO LINKEDIN

By Caroline Melberg

When I come back from a networking event with a lot of business cards, the very first thing I do is to create a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel, with 3 columns on it:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • E-mail Address

If I'm going to add the contacts to my main contact database on my computer, then I will add other details as well and then import it right to my contact database.

But for LinkedIn, all I need are those 3 pieces of information.

Then, I save the file as a ".csv" file, and upload it to LinkedIn.  Here's how I do that:

  • Click on Add Connections (green button, left-hand side)
  • Click on "Don't Use Webmail?"
  • Choose the .csv file from my computer and upload it to LinkedIn

From here, I can select the check boxes in front of the names of the people I want to invite to connect with me on LinkedIn, and click on "add a personal message" to customize the note that I send along.

In the note, I'll typically remind them where I met them, let them know that I enjoyed meeting them and would like to stay in touch.

And of course, I always add the line:

"If you don't want to LinkIn with me, that's ok... just press "archive" below"

That way, if someone doesn't want to connect with you for any reason, they don't have to choose "I don't know this person" to remove the request from their inbox.
