Leader Spotlight

The following interview is the second in a series that will be featured in this eNewsletter.  It will provide us an opportunity to learn from seasoned leaders.

Tracy DahlinTracy Dahlin, owner of Iron River Construction.

What challenges have you had to overcome being in a male-dominated field?

One of the challenges I have had to overcome is the perception that a woman cannot run a construction company, and does not know how to work physically. I sometimes feel that it is thought of more as a "hobby" rather than a career. Also, the only women in construction are thought to be lesbians.

Do you think these are challenges that every woman faces or were they unique to your situation?

Some of these perceptions are common work wide, however, being in a male dominated field, and an especially competitive one has it's own challenges.  On a job site, any woman, in any capacity, is noticed-just for the novelty. Because almost all of the workers are men, sometimes it brings up issues of not wanting to take orders from a woman.  I had a great sider who was a 40 year-old from another culture.  Great craftsman, very professional, hard worker, but after a couple of months, just could not take direction from either me or the female office staff. He would call a field rep, or anyone that was male when he had questions, and even after repeatedly being told to call the office staff or myself, just wouldn't. I think culture also had a part to play with this as well.

What are your top strengths?

One of my strengths is the ability to assess and quickly diagnose problems and come up with equitable solutions-whether it is on the job site, dealing with insurance adjusters and companies, or helping homeowners understand the construction process. I'm able to have an even-keeled temperament under all circumstances.  And I can understand both the homeowner's point of view, and the worker's.  Oftentimes projects are just looked at as "work" not as someone's home.

Do you think your strengths have helped you get to where you are today?

Yes. Often residential insurance restoration construction is looked to be adversarial between the contractor and the insurance company.  This is not necessary; we are both trying to help the homeowner rebuild their home.

Who has mentored you in your career?

No one.  I've slugged it out myself.

What's the most important lesson about leadership that you've learned?

One of the greatest leaders I have ever met was my father-in-law, Bob Dahlin.  He never really counseled me in running a company, but he set a very good example on how to be a successful leader while being modest and moral. In addition, you don't have to be the best on the team, you just have to be on the best team.

What's the best advice that you ever received for advancing your career?

You want to do it, just do it. Suck it up.

What's one piece of advice about career or leadership success that you would give someone who wants to embark into a nontraditional field?

Be prepared to work- a lot.  Nothing worthwhile is easy.

Tracy Dahlin is a licensed contractor, insurance adjuster, roof inspector and owner of Iron River Construction.
